Pros & Cons
There are only really two real choices when it comes to the topic at hand for chapter 1s discussion regarding the ability to take ones own life and that’s whether or not one should be allowed to take their own life if they see it. There are a number of “sub-topics” we’ll call them when discussing this issue as well such as considering this suicide, acting on emotions and legalities too. As earlier mentioned the two options for this scenario are allowing one to take their own life (self euthanasia – the practice of ending a life to prevent pain and suffering) or not allowing them to do so.
Allowing one to take their own life
Pro:
Fulfilling persons wishes (death is a human right)
Person has right to choose what they want to do
Death is personal, doesn’t physically hurt anyone else
Dignified death
Ending pain and suffering
Con:
Emotionally hurt those around you
Person may get better (not terminally ill)
Increased suicide levels amongst younger demographic
2nd party involved legal complications
Third party influences such as doctors, insurances
Conscious stages at points in life (dementia, Alzheimer’s, etc)
Not allowing one to take their own life
Pro:
More medications can be distributed to aid healing/pain
Less controversy surround doctor practices then allowing
Prevented potential psychological distress of families
Avoiding pre mature or emotionally driven deaths
No lost goodbyes or things left unsaid
Prevented legal complications, lobbyist and protesters
Con:
DNR (do not resuscitate list)
Human rights denied
More complicated deaths, increased suicides
Increase pain
Prolong wanted death and unwanted pain
Undermining medical practices
Allowing one to take their own life
